Stronger Libertarians?

Stronger smelling, perhaps. This is why I can no longer vote or support the Libertarian Party: we now have "Libertarian" candidates who are in favor of retaining drug laws and locking up hookers. Some support the war in Iraq and are against a woman's right to choose abortion as an option for an unplanned pregnancy.

These are not "libertarian" in any sense of the word. They've become "Republican Lite" - less filling, perhaps, but but with the same old nasty aftertaste, especially in the area of civil liberties. An old libertarian joke referred to the two major parties as "Tweedle-dee" and "Tweedle-dum". And the only thing I can see changing with the growing "maturity" of the Indiana Libertarian Party is that we'd better add "Tweedle-doo" to the litany, as we will soon have three virtually identical parties to "choose" betwixt.

The fun factor provided by candidates who want to eliminate all drug laws and set up prostitution zones throughout Indianapolis may be gone, but the more sober-minded Libertarians of 2006 are helping their party emerge as a credible alternative.

Notes: If you put a <mailto:> link in the URL field your address will not be mangled: this could be a bad idea as your email address could be easily harvested by bots designed for SPAM. The comments field should now format correctly for line feeds and carriage returns: when you hit the 'Enter' or 'Return' keys in your comment it should break to a new line. The text should wrap cleanly. Please let me know if it doesn't. No HTML tags will pass through - entering links seems to be the main cause of comment SPAM. Also, please be sure that Javascript is enabled in your browser before attempting to post a writeback. Sorry for any inconvenience, but this really helps cut down on the amount of comment SPAM I have to deal with.
