Joe Camel Not only are we getting fatter, we're smoking more! How can this be? I don't get it. From the article:

"The same survey showed that 27.3 percent of Hoosiers said they smoked last year, up from 24.8 percent in 2004."

Maybe we're smoking more because it's mandatory in restaurants. Maybe it's all the "Start Smoking Now" programs we're putting into schools. Or maybe it's all the Joe Camel ads on television ...oh, wait a second! I may be missing something here!

We must be smoking more because of all the stress over daylight savings time.

(Let me sincerely apologize if any of the sarcasm from this post dripped from your screen to your keyboard and gummed things up.)

Stupid question: what are the cigarette prices like in Indiana, compared to the national average? It's also kind of hard for me to believe that Indianans are that out of condition, too...every time I've been in Indiana, I've been impressed by the fact that it seems nearly every house has a basketball hoop out front. Come to think of it, though, I can't say I remember seeing too many kids out front playing ball...I just remember seeing a lot of hoops.

Could it be misery loves company? Looking at the statistics regarding our population we Hoosiers have more in common with Mississippeans then our geographically closer neighbors.... Except maybe Kentucky. Kentuckians like their cigs and hoops too. The problem is Hoosiers and Kentucks use the cigs more than the hoops.

Well, cigarette prices here are lowers than Illinois, much higher than Kentucky, and about the same as Ohio and Michigan. Hoops used to get used a lot more than they do today, in this era of video games. But they still get used quite a bit. I've even been known to make a fool of myself every once in a while playing H-O-R-S-E...(which may be a completely native Hoosier thing - I'm not certain I've ever seen a reference to it being played anywhere else). As for having more in common with the Deep South than our immediate neighbors, I think most social "science" statistics are about as useless as tits on a boar, and I suspect that what's really being seen here is a survey of people who lie less than the set of folks surveyed in 04. OTOH, it could simply be that "forbidden fruit is sweeter", and we're seeing a backlash against the heavy-handed anti-tobacco campaigns of the past few years. Who knows?
