States May Disobey Driver's License Rules

The backlash begins ...

AP - States are threatening to challenge in court and even disobey new orders from Congress to start issuing more uniform driver's licenses and verify the citizenship or legal status of people getting them.

States that have no income taxes like Florida or New Hampshire are already too strapped for cash as it is. Here in FL we actually voted in a class size reduction constitutional amendment in '04, only to have to kill the amendment in '08 because the state was woefully under funded. I can't imagine how any state plans to raise the money to implement this latest unfunded mandate, but I honestly think that here in FL, either property taxes or sales taxes must rise to meet it. That's not likely to make either of the Bush brothers very popular. Remember when Republicans used to be fiscally conservative? Where did that go?

where the Republicans have gone... I think that the only ones left in the party are now known as 'RINO' - Republicans in Name Only. They can be pro-choice, sensible on the environment and, most importantly, respectable even when you disagree with their policy positions. Colin Powell and Christie Todd Whitman come to mind - but they're being slowly driven out of this administration, and even out of the Republican party itself. And Hillary Clinton has become a paragon of federalism and state's rights! What a strange world this has become! Thanks for the comment, and Be well, Dave H.

Sheesh, better cut back on the Red Bull, it doesn't help the brain. As for Hillary, I know it's like feminist taboo and I'll be excommunicated, but that woman is only really out for herself. She doesn't give two hoots for party, constituency, or women. I'm not looking forward to seeing my fellow feminists push her for the '08 ticket.
