Public Health Risk Seen as Parents Reject Vaccines

I wonder if the kids will object to their parents objection when it's polio or smallpox instead of rubella?

In an unusual outbreak of measles in San Diego, 12 children fell ill; nine of them had not been inoculated against the virus because their parents objected.

I worry sometimes that here in this happily alternative-mediciny part of NC Alfie will encounter some unvaccinated person with a nasty disease while he's still too young to have had the full course of his vaccines. While he's this little, the diseases are much more dangerous, too. You would think these 'educated' people could understand the probabilities involved and realize that vaccines save lives and misery of vaccinated people as well as those around them. If someone catches an illness from an unvaccinated child, the parents should be held legally responsible for spreading the disease through their own neglect.

We're talking about life threatening diseases and she's worried about his classmates calling him "spotty". She must have gotten meningitis from an un-vaccinated illness because she clearly has brain damage.

It used to be you couldn't enroll your child in public school without record of the vaccines. What happened to that? What galls me is that these parents themselves were innoculated but they don't want to offer this to their own children. There are risks in all medical interventions, but with immunizations the comparative risk is well worth it. Selfish parents, stupid parents.

Seven of my children received their vaccinations. One did not because she had serious reactions to her first one. We waited 2 years until her body was more mature, and tried again, and again she had a serious reaction. We waited until she was an adult and tried again, and again a serious reaction that kept her in intensive care for 3 weeks. So, she's not vaccinated and never will be. But the others were vaccinated because it made sense to do so and it didn't give them serious reactions. I didn't follow the recommended schedule because I felt that was too stressful for their bodies, but by the time they were school age, they'd had the required vaccinations.
