Hmmm .. looking at this outrageous figures just gave me an idea. We're going to spend well over a billion dollars on all Federal election campaigns this year - and that money cannnot be used as a tax deduction by contributors. However, the campaigns are not taxed on the money either. So, what if we made it a rule that, following the election, any leftover campaign funds from all candidates go immediately to the Federal Treasury? Or be donated to a 501(c)(3) charity of the campaigns choice?
This won't solve the Federal debt, by any means. But it might prove useful for levelling the playing field. Just take a look at the data from the 2000 campaign - there's better than $20 million leftover. And that's just from Presidential campaigns!
Just a thought ...
The Kerry campaign now has more than $140 million. The Bush campaign has raised at least $216 million.
