Japan Detains Ex-Chess Champ Bobby Fischer (AP)

Gee - this is the guy (who was a childhood hero of mine, incidentially) who

...praised the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, saying America should be "wiped out," and described Jews as "thieving, lying bastards."

He'd become quite the little Nazi in the years following his classic championship match in 1972, and was wanted in the US for violating specific State Department (and United Nations) edicts regarding trade for appearing in Yugoslavia in 1992 to play a rematch with his old nemesis Boris Spassky. He won the match, but became a fugitive. What an idiot.

AP - Former world chess champion Bobby Fischer, wanted since 1992 for playing a tournament in Yugoslavia despite U.N. sanctions, has been detained in Japan, clearing the way for his extradition to the United States.

Notes: If you put a <mailto:> link in the URL field your address will not be mangled: this could be a bad idea as your email address could be easily harvested by bots designed for SPAM. The comments field should now format correctly for line feeds and carriage returns: when you hit the 'Enter' or 'Return' keys in your comment it should break to a new line. The text should wrap cleanly. Please let me know if it doesn't. No HTML tags will pass through - entering links seems to be the main cause of comment SPAM. Also, please be sure that Javascript is enabled in your browser before attempting to post a writeback. Sorry for any inconvenience, but this really helps cut down on the amount of comment SPAM I have to deal with.
