How can I compete? Not only would I be living in a cardboard box and starving were I to try and match these wage rates, my employer would be arrested. The Federal minimum wage is $10,712 per year.

Not only are the labor prices cheaper for outsourcing, but the companies usually get a huge tax bonus or incentive from the federal government for doing it! For many Americans who did "all the right things", got good grades, went to college, found a good career, IT work was the pinnacle acchievment for all their training and effort. What are they to do now? We have to stop fooling ourselves in this country that there's a better job waiting if we "just work hard enough". We could blow our whole lives working towards that job just to have it shipped to Bangalor (sp?). Now what? I think, if you ship jobs overseas, you should get a big juicy tax spanked onto your ass for screwing your workforce. I think if you're in the business of manufacturing a product, and you ship all your manufacturing out of the US, you should lose the right to call yourself a US company and have to pay import tarrifs on your goods like a foreign company. I think you should have to inform your customers if you have no US based call support centers (I'm looking at you Dell computers). Am I just a bit protectionist? You bet yer ass I am. I come from a family kept afloat by a major US manufacturer. If they hadn't had plants in the US, our family would have been a lot poorer. I went to school and I did all the right things, only to find that the only people hiring were retail outlets for a minimum wage cashier position. Now my legs are too screwed up to stand for a 12 hour work day, no retailer will touch me and I'm scrambling to find call center/customer support work. If you ship that out of the US, I've got nothing. I'll be sucking off of the good taxpayers and trying to live off of a meager disability stipend. Americans want to work, but we're not all CEO's and geniuses. If you don't leave us the jobs that are within our abilities to do, don't blame us if we're drawing unemployment.
