Preservationists battle to keep gambling out of Gettysburg

Gettysburg was the site of one of the largest battles fought on American soil, but today it is playing host to a different type of fight: Whether slot machines should come to town.

I've still got enough libertarian in me to understand that private business should be able to set up shop wherever - legally. However, I have enough respect for the soldiers, both Union and Confederate, who sacrificed their lives at Gettysburg for causes they desperately believed in, to believe that setting up a casino on the site of "Lee's Gamble" would be akin to setting up a whorehouse to commemorate the Rape of the Sabine Women. Or a opening a slaughterhouse on the site of Auschwitz. Or an advertising scheme that would hang banners from the lintels of Stonehenge. Or maybe dynamiting giant Buddhas because images offend you... of wait, that one's been done! In other words, it's beyond tasteless. Is it criminal? Probably not (or it shouldn't be). But there are such things as cultural and historical artifacts, and companies or governments that desecrate them are certainly worthy of a boycott and a negative PR campaign. Hence the photo in the post. Perhaps too obtuse, but it's been a busy week. Thanks for the comment and, Be well, Dave H.
