OK, which is it? My bet is on the previous report, that smoking (specifically nicotine) helps memory. Why? Because a pharmaceutical company is putting some money on the line in that case, and here all we seem to have is a bunch of bureaucratic busybodies (the NIH) trying to find one more reason to browbeat smokers into quitting.

Smokers often say that smoking a cigarette helps them concentrate and feel more alert. But years of tobacco use may have the opposite effect, dimming the speed and accuracy of a person's thinking ability and bringing down their IQ, according to a new study.

Clouds the brain or not, if you want to live longer and have a better chance at a good quality of life in the years before you check out, don't smoke. I lost two parents prematurely due to smoking. My dad's last several years were really bad. Mom mercifully went pretty fast. If you don't care that's fine with me, but don't expect my insurance premiums, tax dollars, etc. to pay for your health care. Plus show some courtesy and don't smoke where it will affect non-smokers. On my part I'll extend the same courtesy and not insist on folks to not smoke when I frequent a place where smoking is expected. E.G. a bar. I know these places are dwindling. I guess there aren't enough smokers to keep public places open for smokers. I should mention I don't expect folks to light up at the table next to mine in a restaurant. This is a particular bone of contention with smokers. In a restaurant in middle America you have the choice of dining in the smoking section or the screaming kid section. :-) A buddy of mine thinks the law should permit businesses where if you want to go in you have to smoke. If there are enough smokers these places would thrive. :-) Let the market decide.
