Congress May Require Closer Scrutiny to Get a Driver's License

The real story here isn't security, or even drivers licenses. It's the Federal government imposing yet another "unfunded mandate" on the states. This is where Congress sets a policy, and then demands that a lower level (state, county, city) government implement and pay for it. It amounts to a hidden Federal tax increase.

Congress is moving toward requiring states to verify whether applicants are in the U.S. legally before issuing driver's licenses.

The National Assoc of Manufacters, farmers, Contractors Assoc are the ones who oppse this bill wiht a bunch of Wingnuts thrown in. With a licensce that cant be faked they have no way to hide from working illegals. Prime Facie case for the INS if Bush will enforce. You must note Bill Frist, the TV Doc is fighting it wanting to keep cheap labor.

Mr. Sensenbrenner is kidding only himself, of course! And it wouldn't surprise me if they added a biometric device to these new national ID cards (and I call them that because I'm not kidding myself) - which would of course, cut down substantially on fraud. And add a whole new meaning to "Your papers, please!" ... The American Dream is fast becoming a nightmare. Be well, Dave H.

This has been along time coming. It does have some merit, the concept in and of itself. But with our lax data security everybody on the planet will be able to impersonate an American citizen within 2 years of this thing going on full force. What we need are our original border security laws being enforced; there's money allocated for another 2000 border guards and only 210 are being hired? We as the citizenry need to stnad up and stop this nonsense once and for all.

Well, I've never posted anything that's drawn this many writebacks! Has this little rant been picked up somewhere else, I wonder? I'd like to see the borders enforced, too, if for no other reason than it's the law, and I was always under the impression that the laws were supposed to be enforced. But I can't for the life of me see how requiring a national ID card is going to deter illegal immigration - they're already here illegally, so what's one more crime (lack of a paper) added to the pile! It really is scary out here - and as for Glad's comment - well, if you carefully re-read my original I was bitching about the cost of this insane initiative, deliberately bypassing it's "security" implications. I don't have anything to hide, particularly, but I resent paying with my hard earned chicken dollars to prove that I'm "innocent"! If one little post in a blog can engender this much angst, from a wide variety of commenters, I wonder what the results will be when were all forced to come up with four unique forms of ID next time we go to renew our driver's licenses? I'd wager that it ain't gonna be pretty down at your local bureau of motor vehicles ... Thanks for all the comments and Be well, Dave H.
