The Pause Before the Storm?

We had a veritable heat wave this weekend - why the temperature almost hit 30°F! Took advantage of things to drop a couple of round bales in the paddocks - all the hooved critters sure appreciated that! Now if I could just inspire my hens, who've seemingly now decided that cold weather is no time to lay eggs after all. Perhaps I bragged too soon, or perhaps no chickens lays an egg when the temperature is below zero for a week solid. But in any event production has dropped drastically (like cut in half).

Maybe the warming trend will fire'em up, but perhaps now. You see, we're awaiting the second major snowstorm of the season, which is supposed to be here Monday evening and linger through Tuesday, dropping up to a foot of the white stuff on us. On top of the seven or eight inches already on the ground. So I doubt if the hens get busy laying - they're gonna be too tied up just keeping warm and dry.

Notes: If you put a <mailto:> link in the URL field your address will not be mangled: this could be a bad idea as your email address could be easily harvested by bots designed for SPAM. The comments field should now format correctly for line feeds and carriage returns: when you hit the 'Enter' or 'Return' keys in your comment it should break to a new line. The text should wrap cleanly. Please let me know if it doesn't. No HTML tags will pass through - entering links seems to be the main cause of comment SPAM. Also, please be sure that Javascript is enabled in your browser before attempting to post a writeback. Sorry for any inconvenience, but this really helps cut down on the amount of comment SPAM I have to deal with.
