Some of my friends just can't understand why I swear I'll never return to the corporate cubicle wars - I'd rather live in a homeless shelter than put up with one more "beach party" in a warehouse, where "participation is not mandatory, but attendance will be taken". Beatings will continue until morale improves ...

They tell me I must be worried sick over where the money's gonna come from to pay the bills next week, but in truth, I'm a lot less worried now than I was when I was slaving over a hot terminal for Da Man. Nobody's gonna ship my chickens to India next week and hand me a pink slip.

You just want to come in and do your job? Too bad. Before you can get down to business—and that is the reason for work, isn't it? — you have to wade through nonsense, miles of it and hip-deep. Pep rallies, team-building exercises, politics, line-toeing, tribute-paying, office cliques and nepotism and hoop-jumping. And it's all the bullshit that's really important. If you don't buy into all that, it doesn't matter how well you do your job.

One of the essays on Witchvox (was this year I think) talked about corporate vampirism. Now, generally anything with the word vampirism doesn't get notice from me, but this article was particularliy well thought out. Lets see if I can find the link...(dangit, 'Vox won't load for me right now) I noticed it both when I worked retail and call center. The more I resisted having the real substance of my identity scooped out in favor of the junk-food corporate soul replacement, the more I got lectures about not having the "right attitude". Somehow focus on the customer had shifted to second place, and fitting in with the corporate culture was the prime directive. You were expected to take it home with you and live it in your off hours. The author of this article is right, it's like joining a cult. I'd wake from fitful dreams of doing my job feeling drained and fatalistic, and face a 10 hour day of people threateningly demanding I have more pep and more dedication. I'm beginning to think those "personality tests" you have to take to get hired are not a yardstick of your fitness to do the job, but a measure of how easy you are to brainwash and manipulate. I've heard of many cults using the same Myers Briggs tests to find their victims, discover who is most likely to stay for life, who is likely to give over both their free will and all their earthly possessions, who will be willing to drink the kool-aid when the time comes. Obviously I'm unemployed at the moment. I never liked kool-aid that much anyway.
