Wish I had more time to blog, but things are really hoppin' around here. I'm finishing up a project for my remaining software client, setting up a new recording paradigm for Odin LIVES!, and trying to get ready for the weekend up at Dull's. To top it all off, we once more have all three truck running (well, one of them's a new [used] F-250) and the chicks I've been brooding since August are starting to lay. Just pullet eggs right now, of course, but that's OK, as I sell those for $3/doz. to noodle makers. They're richer than regular eggs, and make superb egg noodles.

If I get back in time (I'm heading to western Ohio) tomorrow I'll try to post a bit, but if not, well, Kris has promised more pix of the draft goats over the weekend. And I'm looking for an appropriate hat - I think I'll forgo the whole suit, unless they make real insulated ones, as the temperature won't get above freezing all weekend, and the wind is projected to be quite gusty.

I didn't know that about the poulet eggs. Interesting. So, how do you get your hens to lay so young. Ours don't start laying until five months or so. What breed are yours? How do you feed them, etc?

Wow! Three comments on a post - that's rare! But I'm glad y'all like the new photo setups - and the "George Carlin" look is indeed more or less intentional. Kris grabbed the frame from the commercial I made for Apple in 2002 - it's the part where I'm talking about the Mac's intended audience: "it's not just for pointy headed intellectuals from California". As for hens laying young, well, they're a few days over four months, and that's just always been our experience - I've had some start laying at about 3 months, but the eggs were the size of my thumbnail, and pretty much useless for anything. I've got to get a picture of the new flock - most of the them are Red Star's and Golden Comets, but there's a good smattering of other breeds as well, including a couple of Aracauna's, some Australorps and more than a few Barred Rocks. I think there's three White Leghorns - and Miss Lucky, a Rhode Island Red who successfully evaded me when we slaughtered last month. One key to keeping production going (or getting it started) in winter is light: the henhouse is on a timer set to 14 hours of bright, white light per day, and the rest of the time under red heat lamps. In the spring I'll back off the hours of light to align with the Sun, and will cut the red out entirely once natural daylight goes over 13 hours. Thanks for all the comments, and, Be well, Dave H.
