Worried about the growing ability of private-label competitors to mimic its products, Kraft Foods Inc. is doubling the number of its patent lawyers in a bid to protect its innovations.

If this is the culmination of some secret technology that Kraft spent millions developing, they should get their money back. Seriously, Kraft can't compete with most "look alike" products put out by companies like Wal-Mart. There will always be someone willing to do things cheeper. The best bet Kraft can make is to try to improve the quality of their foods rather than waste money trying to protect the brand name. I reached for the Kraft cheese instead of the Wal-Mart cheese because I mistakenly thought it was slightly better. Having been abused of my faith in the brand, I now know that if I want quality, I probably should start further up the rung. Yuck.
