The Third Meditation

Remembering the past is the key to discovering the future and building the present.

None of us will have “eternal life” – that is, life as the conscious individual we are, forever. All of us will have “eternal life” to the extent that our genes and deeds survive us and are remembered.

It is important to understand that we, as products of our genetic and cultural heritage, are our ancestors “eternal life”.

None of us will be “reincarnated” – that is, reborn into another human body as the exact duplicate of the individual we are now. However, all of us will be “reincarnated” forever, in many separate streams, as our genes and deeds survive us.

Religion is the process by which we grasp eternity.

Divinity is the attempt by the universe itself to become self-aware.

We have a long time with which to figure all this out.

Notes: If you put a <mailto:> link in the URL field your address will not be mangled: this could be a bad idea as your email address could be easily harvested by bots designed for SPAM. The comments field should now format correctly for line feeds and carriage returns: when you hit the 'Enter' or 'Return' keys in your comment it should break to a new line. The text should wrap cleanly. Please let me know if it doesn't. No HTML tags will pass through - entering links seems to be the main cause of comment SPAM. Also, please be sure that Javascript is enabled in your browser before attempting to post a writeback. Sorry for any inconvenience, but this really helps cut down on the amount of comment SPAM I have to deal with.
