Not Quite Heartless, After All
From over at The Wild Hunt comes a bit of a followup to my post from last November, commenting on the Administration's chief dispenser of "faith-based" funds basically saying that there were no pagan charities, as we lack "loving hearts".
When confronted face to face by real life pagans, as the author of the article points out, Towey came about as close as you can get to an apology from a politician:
Mr. Towey said that he had replied honestly; he was not aware, at the time that he answered the question, of any Pagan charitable organizations. Since then, he had gotten over 1500 letters and emails from Pagans outlining their charitable works, had met with "one or two" Pagans in Washington, and in fact believed that one Pagan organization had actually received money for their soup kitchen. He also stated that the forum in which the question was asked, didn't give him really enough time to think about the question, and that he wished now, he had given more thought to the question before he answered.
One of those emails was mine, detailing Ravenswood's work with the Hamilton County, Indiana chapter of the American Red Cross and some of our other efforts in the community.
And apparently, the emails and letters had some effect. I just gotta wonder if it's mere election year backpedeling - if Bush and his gang get re-elected, I suppose we'll find out.
