In Africa, Islam and Christianity are growing - and blending

I find this rather concerning - should the two great monotheist faiths manage to join forces (by blending theologies) the sheer size of the resultant mass would be sure to spell trouble for heathens, pagans, atheists, freethinkers and dare I say it, remaining orthodox Christians and Muslims. It could be "Inquisition Meets Jihad" - and if that doesn't scare you, you've been living under a rock for the last six years.

Whether this overlap will spread or remain uniquely African is still up for debate.

I doubt very much that it would catch on in many other parts of the world - there are too many fundamentalists on both sides who have been entrenched for too long. Excepting the northern part of the continent, Islam and Christianity are quite new to Africa.

Syncretism is pretty common in most ethnic religions: look at ancient Rome or Greece for some pretty glaring examples. So it doesn't surprise me that this is happening in Africa. What does surprise me it that it's not happened before, or at least not on this scale. The Bahai Faith in Iran has tried to meld religions on a global scale and met with some success, but this is very different from that effort in that it concentrates on the two most strident and evangelical religions. And that's what concerns me. Steven is right - something good could come out of this. But with history as a guide, well, I'm still concerned. Thanks for the comments and Be well, Dave H.
