FDA issues new rules to combat mad cow disease (USATODAY.com)

Two flaws with this new regime -

  1. BSE is a progressive disease: it does not spring forth magically in cattle at 30 months of age.
  2. BSE and other prion disorders are caused by feeding cattle contaminated feed made from other ruminants - and this is what the regulations specifically do not address, preferring "further study"

Thus, these new rules will do absolutely nothing to prevent the spread of BSE or other prion diseases. Bureaucracy in action ...

USATODAY.com - Six months after the discovery of the first U.S. case of mad cow disease, the Food and Drug Administration issued long-delayed rules Friday banning nervous system tissue and other cattle parts from use in human food, dietary supplements and cosmetics.
