Court spares life of inquisitive student

Can somebody tell me again how the Government of Afghanistan differs from the Taliban? Is it because the government gave him a show trial and only sentenced him to 20 years while the Taliban would've just shot him on the spot?

An Afghan appeals court overturned a death sentence Tuesday for a journalism student accused of blasphemy for asking questions in class about women's rights under Islam. But the judges still sentenced him to 20 years in prison.
