Blizzard Update

An interesting day, no doubt. Not, in my humble opinion, quite as bad as the Blizzard of '77, but certainly bad enough. This is what the weather radio is spewing now:

Blizzard Warning in effect... snow...heavy at times...will continue through 1000 PM EST. Some cities that will continue to see snow and reduced visibilities include Lafayette...Kokomo...Muncie and Noblesville. Snow may fall at a rate of one inch per hour at times. Winds are expected to continue at 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 35 mph...which will cause considerable blowing and drifting of the Snow. White out conditions will occur. Some areas have reported 4 to 6 foot drifts already. Do not drive or venture out unless it is an emergency.

I've got one of those drifts blocking the garage door - it remains to be seen if I'll be able to get out and make it to work tomorrow or not. As noted, it's still snowing and still blowing. According to the local TV, we have about 14" on the ground here, and will have about 20" by the time all's said and done. Don't know if we'll make it to that predicted depth, and honestly, even if we did, I'm not sure how we'd know, as the wind is just howling at times. It's certainly a whiteout tonight. Parts of the paddocks are completely bare where all the snow's been piled into drifts.

I guess we're just getting paid back big time for having had March in December - uggh! I wonder what March will be like?

Blizzard!

Well, here's a brief from the National Weather Service that we've not seen in these parts for some thirty years:

...BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT EST TONIGHT...
...WINTER STORM WARNING IS CANCELLED...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN INDIANAPOLIS HAS ISSUED A BLIZZARD WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT EST TONIGHT. THE WINTER STORM WARNING HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

HEAVY SNOW ALONG WITH FREQUENT WIND GUSTS OF 35 MPH OR HIGHER WILL REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO NEAR ZERO AT TIMES TODAY. SNOWFALL OF 8 TO AS MUCH AS 14 INCHES WILL OCCUR BY TONIGHT.

A BLIZZARD WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW WITH STRONG WINDS AND POOR VISIBILITIES ARE LIKELY. THIS WILL LEAD TO WHITEOUT CONDITIONS...MAKING TRAVEL EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. DO NOT TRAVEL.

So I'm sitting in the library on a very wintry Tuesday morning - I can't even see the highway (about 100 yards away) much less drive to it or on it.

In truth it kinda makes me a bit nostalgic - my eldest daughter Rhiannon was born during the Great Indiana Blizzard of 1977. That was fun! Ha! But then again, I was thirty years younger, and could chase down county snow plows while wearing nothing but my long johns and barely break a sweat. Now, it'd be a different story.

All I'm hoping for at this point is that I don't lose the barn roof (I have a panel that ripped loose during the night) and that Francie (my only doe goat) doesn't pick today to have her kids. Maybe I'll get lucky.
