More universities agree to RIAA/Napster 'protection'

I thought the "protection" reference in the headline was just another example of purple prose and hyperbole from The Register - but I was wrong. They're promising the schools that they won't engage in highly publicized lawsuits against their students if the schools sign every student up for their "service" - at between $3 and $10 per month each!

And what a service it is:

Once their four years at school are over, the students are cut off from Napster and lose all the music they've download. That is unless they pay 99 cents per song or $10 per album to own a permanent download that can be burned onto CDs or MP3 players.

The RIAA and its business front Napster signed up six more universities today to their music rental service - a program that could force parents to shell out even more money for higher education costs.

Checking Account Fraud Is Increasing (washingtonpost.com)

It seems to me that this could be easily solved: just don't clear checks without a signature. Sometimes security isn't very convenient.

washingtonpost.com - When Shereen Greene recently scanned her bank statement, she found a $139 charge from a company she had never heard of -- Pharmacycards.com.
